Right, we’ve had a post about The Pixel Cafe, so I figured that I’d make a post about Paradox. I’m one of the two GMs for Paradox, and currently the longest-running GM if we go by technicalities. I figured it’s time to explain the RP to people who aren’t on Case Files. Be prepared for a wall o’ text.

Paradox had started back on Court-Record’s emergency backup forum during the long downtime over the winter where the Northeast was battered by a crapton of snow two years ago. Back then, it was run by GTF for a time. It started out as your standard “Throw every character of every continuity together and see what happens” RP. Now, these RPs are prone to crashing and burning for a variety of reasons, most of which involve people getting bored and moving on. Paradox, however, somehow managed to thrive.

That’s not to say that we didn’t have our problems. We had a lot of problems along the way. For starters, the RP somehow managed to confuse GTF enough that he gave up his position as GM (It was moving really fast for him and he didn’t know what was going on). During the time between him removing his characters and giving up his GM position, another RPer, Anthony, joined the RP and tried to hijack the plot. Now, Anthony’s character was an OC, compared to everyone else (except Scarlet Shadow, at the time) using canon characters.

Now, looking back on it all, Anthony’s character had a lot of potential to be interesting, but things just didn’t work out. Long story short, Anthony’s character was extremely overpowered and kind of a jackass to the other characters. It was also around then that the RP switched gears from “somewhat grounded in reality” (Everyone was in New York City at the time Anthony came in) to “Completely fantastic” (They got moved to Anthony’s kingdom somehow). I’m not saying that was a bad switch, it certainly enabled several things that helped make Paradox survive, but Anthony’s character was causing trouble for everyone and some people were backing out as a result.

Now, you’re probably wondering where I come in, yeah? You see, Anthony had wanted his character’s girlfriend to get kidnapped, and another character said that Bowser would get involved. Anthony suggested that I play Bowser, and another player, Jamie, agreed that I would make a good one. So I come in as Bowser. After some fight scenes, Anthony got his girl back, but everyone decided to jump ship to join Bowser in fixing up the Paradox. By this time, GTF decided that he couldn’t keep up and Anthony was made GM. However, I was still the one writing the plot (something that most of the players say was a good thing, though there is some dissent).

Bowser wound up bringing the group to Dr. Eggman (also played by me), where Eggman revealed that the Paradox was potentially multiverse-threatening. Of course, given that I wasn’t an official GM, I wasn’t quite able to act on it for a while.

Eventually, we made the move to Case Files, where the RP wasn’t posted for a while, until Hamlet decided to hijack the RP and posted it himself. I was made an official GM, and Anthony got the boot from his position. His character was still there, for a time, but eventually his character was removed for numerous counts of god-modding. With Anthony’s character removed, we experienced a huge influx of RPers, both old and new.

With me as an official GM, I was able to finally finish writing the plot for the RP, and was able to act on it. I suspect that having an actual plot for the RP was what was able to help the RP survive on a normally generic setting.

Paradox has currently finished its first major arc (of 5), and is currently in a filler arc as a few details are finalized for Arc 2. It is currently the second-biggest RP on the forum, a fact that continues to astound me to this day.

All Von Karmas are to be prosecutors, but it does make sense that the mystery one wasn’t a boy. While Edgeworth was taken in as a grand scheme to wipe every speck of Gregory from the earth, I image Manfred was pleased to have himself a “son”.
Poor Franzy really just wanted her Papa’s attention but he gave it all to Edgeworth and presumably his firstborn. Just picture her, trying to show Papa a picture she drew and him not caring. She wants to cry but Von Karmas aren’t allowed.
